RP4 Boot from USB3 for mythbackend

Post by jfabernathy » Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:42 pm

On my RPi4 mythbackend I've been booting from a USB3 to SATA SSD by having the rootfs on the SSD and the boot partition on the microSD.

The Raspberry Pi folks have now promoted their USB beta eeprom bootloader to stable on the 2020-6-15 version.

It works for me. However, at this time it's not any easier to setup a USB boot than the way it was done previously since the image you create using the Raspberry Imager still needs to be booted from SDcard, updated, then copied to a USB boot device before you can remove the SDcard complete for booting.

It works and it shouldn't be too long before the production image can be flashed onto the USB device and booted directly.
