OS X User Poll

Post by pvr4me »

There seem to have been a number of new users of Myth on OS X recently. Would you mind sharing a little info?

How did you hear about Myth on Mac?
Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously?
Where are you located?
Recording cable or OTA?
What tuner(s) are you using?
Which model Mac and OS version you're using?
Are you using the all-in-one installer (https://sourceforge.net/projects/macpor ... installer/), the bundled softare (http://www.avenard.org/files/mythtv/mac/) or something else (what)?

Feel free to add any comments.

I'll go first:

How did you hear about Myth on Mac? 7-8 years ago on AVSForum, I believe
Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously? Yeah, again 7-8 years ago.
Where are you located? Ontario, Canada
Recording cable or OTA? Both. OTA from Toronto and Buffalo.
What tuner(s) are you using? 2 X HDHomerun Dual
Which model Mac and OS version you're using? HTPC is a Core i5 Mini (2012), 10.8.5
Are you using the all-in-one installer (https://sourceforge.net/projects/macpor ... installer/), the bundled softare (http://www.avenard.org/files/mythtv/mac/) or something else (what)? Using 0.27.4 built with MacPorts.

Feel free to add any comments. Well, Craig's a bit of a jerk but I'm stuck with him. ;) Would love to see a really seamless solution for viewing on the iPad. George's MythExpress is pretty close; need to go back and play with it a bit more.

How did you hear about Myth on Mac? By doing research about HD Homerun
Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously? No
Where are you located? Akron Ohio, USA
Recording cable or OTA? OTA
What tuner(s) are you using? HD Homerune Dual
Which model Mac and OS version you're using? Macbook Pro, OSX Version 10.9.5
Are you using the all-in-one installer (https://sourceforge.net/projects/macpor ... installer/), the bundled softare (http://www.avenard.org/files/mythtv/mac/) or something else (what)? All-in-one installer

I do not have cable, but I want to watch live sports on my projector in my basement. I don't even really want to record anything. I just want to watch it. I do not have an antenna that reaches to my basement, so I bought the HD Homeun. On my Windows machine, the HD Homerun software allows you to watch OTA channels. The Mac does not have that functionality (at least as far as I know). The Internet said that you need either EyeTV or MythTV, so that's why I am attempting to get this working.

I appreciate your help.

Her you go!

How did you hear about Myth on Mac? Looking at HDHomeRun while searching for alternatives to my Bell FibeTV
Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously? No
Where are you located? Montreal, Qc
Recording cable or OTA? OTA, this as well has been a new experience for me
What tuner(s) are you using? One HDHomeRun Plus
Which model Mac and OS version you're using? Imac 21.5 inch late 2009; OSX10.9.5
Are you using the all-in-one installer (https://sourceforge.net/projects/macpor ... installer/), the bundled software (http://www.avenard.org/files/mythtv/mac/) or something else (what)? The all in-one from MacPorts. First tried with old link from MythTV for 0.27.4 before the MacPorts version was the preferred by MythTV and failed! .

A big thanks to Craig for all the work he is doing and the essential help he is giving to beginners like me.

How did you hear about Myth on Mac?
AVSforum

Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously?
Was using GB-PVR on a WHS v1. Was thinking of turning it into a Hackintosh, but didn't until I knew there was a rock solid, stable PVR solution for OS X.

Where are you located?
USA

Recording cable or OTA?
80% OTA and 20% Clear QAM

What tuner(s) are you using?
A 1st gen and 3rd gen HDHomerun

Which model Mac and OS version you're using?
Using 10.9 on a Hackintosh right now (upgraded HP Mediasmart EX485)

Haven't upgraded yet to the Schedules Direct fix. Just using the hosts file fix for now.

I use nPlayer (via Myth's uPNP support) on my iPad and iPhone to watch recordings and XBMC (via an add-on) on my MacBook to watch recordings and live TV.

How did you hear about Myth on Mac? Web searches years ago and again very recently.
Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously? No, just a former slave to Comcost & TiVo.
Where are you located? Seattle/Tacom vicinity
Recording cable or OTA? OTA
What tuner(s) are you using? HD HomeRun
Which model Mac and OS version you're using? Mini Server (mid 2011), 10.10.3
Are you using the ... something else (what)? Trying to use the osx-packager-qtsdk.pl from the github.com/MythTV/packaging.git repo.

I'm trying this route (no joy yet) because I got frustrated with MacPorts some years ago and have been pretty happy with Homebrew. From reading other posts, I know Craig doesn't really have the bandwidth to help support this so I may have to give up if I keep running into problems and switch.

How did you hear about Myth on Mac? Searching for Mac DVR
Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously? I actually have EyeTV but only use it to record stuff off of a dvr via Hauppauge HD PVR. Currently using NextPVR on Windows, but, that machine is overloaded and want to use a different machine.
Where are you located? Calera, OK
Recording cable or OTA? OTA
What tuner(s) are you using? HDHomeRun Connect
Which model Mac and OS version you're using? iMac 2014 27" 10.10.4
Are you using the all-in-one installer (https://sourceforge.net/projects/macpor ... installer/), the bundled softare (http://www.avenard.org/files/mythtv/mac/) or something else (what)? Macports

Hoping to replace NextPVR / mcebuddy / comskip on a Windows machine. That machines purpose was to run PlayOn and it can't do everything at once, it bogs down. Currently, I record 6 network channels on my dual tuner using NextPVR at the same time (each channel has 3 subs), so, I believe multirecord is possible in mythTV. I record all shows on all 6 channels from 7PM to 10:30PM each night of the week, so, from looking at mythTV, it appears one can use MySQL custom schedules, so, that should work also. On Windows is difficult to script compared to Mac where I will be able to more easily put stuff where I want it. Very familiar with MySQL, am a programmer, so, looks good to me! NextPVR uses sqlite, which is not as convenient and some of it is slow.

Only want to use mythTV to record as described above. As long as I can make it do that, that's what I want. Using zap2xml for a guide on NextPVR, sounds like I can continue doing so.

How did you hear about Myth on Mac?
Oddly, after learning about TVHeadEnd and then poking about for any similar solutions. That led to LinuxTV, which lead to Myth, which led me to notice there is an OS X port.

Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously?
Basically no... I had EyeTV some time ago back in the analog days, but haven't use it in about a decade. I think I still have the tuner dongle, but it's the analog one so not very useful!

Where are you located?
Ajax, Ontario, Canada.

Recording cable or OTA?
Recording neither. My ultimate aim is live TV on my various devices.

What tuner(s) are you using?
Waiting for my Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-955Q to arrive - it's been more than a week, I guess I have to call someone.

Which model Mac and OS version you're using?
Base model of the new Mac Pro. If you're wondering - unless you do video, get an iMac instead.

Are you using the all-in-one installer
Yes.

How did you hear about Myth on Mac? Searching for Clear QAM support similar to EyeTV software
Were you using EyeTV (or other software) previously? EyeTV, quite successfully since around 2006 for digital OTA
Where are you located? CA, USA
Recording cable or OTA? Cable, unsuccessfully; OTA with EyeTV no problem
What tuner(s) are you using? HD HomeRun
Which model Mac and OS version you're using? Mac mini late 2014, OS X 10.10.5
Are you using the all-in-one installer (https://sourceforge.net/projects/macpor ... installer/), the bundled softare (http://www.avenard.org/files/mythtv/mac/) or something else (what)? Bundled

Feel free to add any comments.
The MySQL installation recommendation does not install without issues.
Beyond that, I have been unable to watch, much less record, anything to date, having abandoned the effort last year.

I seem to have random issues like if the microwave is on, TV reception goes really bad, if I am downloading something at home reception goes really bad. However I can watch a 4k movie without any issues. So not sure what would cause those issues?
