Controlling a roku and recording from its output?

Post by bezaur »

I used mythTV a while ago but have since moved to streaming and a roku device. Sadly, streaming is now inserting commercials and removing past episodes (seeming at random) making TV once again hard to watch.

What I'm looking for is the ability to have mythTV select a show from the roku and then record the show using a capture card. Specifically tell mythTV to grab all episodes of a particular show and have it automatically go through the roku UI to start each episode and tell the video capture card to start recording).

This has some similarity to what has been done in the past when working with cable set top boxes - mythTV would automatically choose the channel on the cable box and then start the recording. Assuming one can record the show (roku hdmi output -> video capture card hdmi input), one would then get all the beauty and freedom of mythTV (remove commercials, watch at my own time without worrying about the show disappearing from streaming, etc).

Anyone know of something like this?

Thanks!

P. S. As for why I don't do OTA? Where we live we don't get many OTA channels.

Some users are recording from a Roku device as indicated in the wiki.

The developer of the Magewell2ts application specifically includes "roku" in the readme file for the app. A Magewell Pro capture card has the ability to record from HDMI with MythTV using the External Recorder method provided the content is not HDCP protected.

For a similar project using a generic capture device and scripts which control a FireStick, see Peter Bennet's fine work: https://github.com/bennettpeter/MythTV-LeanCapture
