[Solved] Mythfrontend playback on quarter screen

So I (and a few others on the mythtv forums are experiencing issues with mythfrontend playback where the screen only renders the playback in the bottom left quarter of the screen. This only occurs when playing back non1080 (480p, 480i) videos (i.e. 1080p videos play fullscreen)

There are also times when the screen GUI (menus) on render in the bottom quarter of the screen but the jumps back to fullscreen view after digging through menus.

The part that caught my eye was that the application seems to think initially that the geometry is get at 1280x800 where - according to the system and the output above my screen resolution is 2560 x 1600.

Now if I tell mythfrontend to use a specific screen geometry (i.e. ./mythfrontend.app/Contents/MacOS/mythfrontend -geometry 2560x1600) or if I put those setting into "Settings->Appearance->Theme/Screen Setting->GUI Dimension" I get a screen that is larger than my display.

If I set the geometry to 1280x900 (mythfrontend.app/Contents/MacOS/mythfrontend -v playback -geometry 1280x900) I get a mostly black screen with the GUI and playback in the bottom left corner of the screen (about a quarter of the screen).

Any suggestions on steps or settings to troubleshoot before submitting a bug?

Have you tried changing settings in Mac System Preferences > Displays. Maybe select one of the Scaled settings and re-launch MFE. See:

The support doc has a section on Using Apps with a Retina Display. Apparently there is an option in each app's Info box, "Open in Low Resolution".

I'd call it a band-aid; not a solution. I think some code must need tweaking to account for high-dpi screens on macOS. What those tweaks are, I have no idea.

@mark_k - My sincerest apologies, I missed the OSD on video playback in my testing of your fix. Unfortunately, it's renderering oversized. Thankfully is more of an annoyance than a big issue.
