Stutter playback on new Pi 3 B+

Post by grego892 »

I've been working with Mythtv for over 10 years now. I am trying my first Mythv Light on a new Pi 3 B+. I have followed the wiki several time, but video is very jerky. I've tried every suggestion in the forums, with no change. The only improvement I can find is to change the OS resolution from 1920x1080 to 1280x720. While that improved it, it's still not great. It seems as if there is something not right. People with much older hardware have smooth playback.

I have MPEG key entered, GPU set to 320 (tried many others), running 29.1, Openmax:high (and normal). I also tried the different OpenGL options.

Any ideas? Should I try a older Raspbian version?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Greg

Did you set the "performance mode" as described here ? - https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Raspberry_P ... erformance

Which raspbian and MythTV-light versions are you using? To find raspbian version run "cat /etc/rpi-issue". I am using raspbian "2017-08-16". You can download older versions of raspbian here http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/images/

While playing, if you select "playback data" from the menu does it show you are using OpenMAX? See if anything looks wrong there.

Raspberry Pi reference 2018-06-27
Generated using pi-gen, github/RPi-Distro/pi-gen, 0d34fb94398a4bd79711f21d6a0b5d35fe5f4a76, stage5

4.14.67-v7+ #1139 SMP Wed Aug 29 15:17:05 BST 2018 armv7l

Perhaps I should try it again without apt dist-upgrade ? But still do rpi-update ?

I'm guessing my tendency to want bleeding edge versions is my issue.

It seems to be using OpenMax.

I downloaded the latest raspbian image, and there seem to be problems with stuttering and general performance. For now, I recommend using 2017-08-16 version.

I have the same problem. Unfortunately the 2017-08-16 release of Raspbian doesn't boot on the 3 B+.

Please try selecting the playback profile "OpenMax Normal". That should solve the problem for now. I am looking into a better solution.

I managed to get the 2017-08-16 release of Raspbian installed. I had to boot the SD card from a RPi3 (not 3B+) and run raspi-update. That updated the bootloader, unfortunately it didn't resolve the issues. I've tried the "OpenMax Normal" and "RaspberryPi" profiles but it doesn't make much difference.

I may try an older release like Jessie and see what happens.

I have done some more testing on this, and as long as you run without "-v playback" and use OpenMAX Normal, it should work on the latest version of raaspbian, or the 2017 version. I no longer recommend installing the 2017 version.

I didn't see the OP return with an update after the last suggestion. I am also having 1080i stutter problems. I've started my own thread with a detailed background, but if OP notices this and can update it would be appreciated. I am on a 3 not a 3+ so it may not be related.

I abandoned and went with Libreelec and myhtv client plugin. Works great and updated often.

Ok, I'll give that a whirl too.

Does the client allow full scheduling etc? I do like the full frontend experince from MythLight.

Yes. Not as easy to schedule but it works.
