If you were starting with a clean slate.... What OS for Myth box?

Post by Marcus Aurelius »

What a long, strange trip it's been! And it ain't over yet.

I tried three times to get an Ubuntu install to work with Myth and my Hauppauge WinTV QuadHD tuner card. After finding out that my Gigabyte AM4 motherboard is known the world over for giving problems with new versions of Ubuntu, I tore the system down and rebuilt it on an ASRock board with the Ryzen 3 processor.

The Hauppauge website says their PPA supports kernel 4.4 and 4.10, which led me to installing Zesty 17.04. Is this a good choice? Right after the install, it's barking at me saying the OS is no longer supported.

I am familiar with Ubuntu and would prefer to stick with them, but is there a better choice? I am a long ways from being a Linux whiz, but I poke around on the command line when I need to.

So, what OS works best with the Hauppauge tuners and MythTV?

If you want to stick with Ubuntu, it's probably best to stick with the last LTS at the moment (16.04). The Mythbuntu team suggested starting with a basic server installation and then adding a slim desktop, e.g. XFCE, and then installing the Mythbuntu repos and configuring MythTV from there when they called time on Mythbuntu as a distribution.

If you need Hauppauge patches, you have to use their ppa on 17.10 Artful (I suggest Xubuntu or Lubuntu) which is now the only supported operating system, all the others are End of Life.

Zesty has just gone End of Life, but you can do an in-place upgrade to Artful 17.10, which Hauppauge do support (despite what is on the web site). After the in-place upgrade (I think this disables the ppa) you will need to re-add the Hauppauge ppa and reinstall the two packages.

I have the DVB-T/T2 version of the QuadHD card and tried it on a clean install of Xubuntu 17.10, with the Hauppauge ppa and mythtv 29 and it works ok.

Note the Hauppauge ppa installs a new kernel as well, personally I don't like this as it means you are now reliant on Hauppauge for kernel security fixes (rather than Ubuntu maintainers).

This is the kernel installed from Hauppauge ppa:
Linux xubutu17 4.13.0-19201712311231-generic #0+mediatree+hauppauge-Ubuntu SMP Sun Dec 31 21:14:27 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This is the kernel installed on a fully updated Artful installation:
Linux xubutu17 4.13.0-25-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 8 21:14:41 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

As you can see the Artful kernel is later, certainly by date, I have no idea about content.

It is a shame that Hauppauge made the decision not to support Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, using just a V4L (media stack) update. Even better would have been to get the required changes into the mainline V4L and hence into the kernel.

Thank you so much for the replies, Gentlemen! I have upgraded to 17.10, and will proceed from there. I'll keep you all posted. I too am miffed that they didn't see fit to accommodate 16.04 LTS.

Well, here I am. Installed myth 29 and set it up last night. Scan went as before, no lock, no channels. I've checked the output from dmesg and I'm getting an error like "fix frontend error" or something like that. I guess I could start another topic and post up dmesg output?

New post with dmesg output would be good.

Sorry this is ugly. I think I'm missing a driver, si 2165. Is that something I can just pick up from github and put in a folder, or do I need to install it somehow?

Not sure about the driver 2165, those messages seem to indicate the driver was included.

Can you attach, as a file attachment to a post, the complete output from the dmesg command (dmesg >dmesg.log) following a reboot.

Thanks for the dmesg.txt file.

The only thing that stands out is the risc errors for each of the tuners, I don't know if they are fatal or just a warning (the actual code indicates warning):

It could be worthwhile checking if your card actually works outside of mythtv, to do this:

In a terminal make sure mythbacked is not running :
sudo systemctl stop mythtv-backend.service

Install w_scan :
sudo apt install w-scan

Run w_scan for ATSC VSB (United States, Over-the-Air) - info taken from https://github.com/b-rad-NDi/Ubuntu-med ... /issues/31 :

w_scan -fa -A1 -c US -X

Thanks Mike! I will do that.

The card was working briefly with Kaffeine, but I can't even recall what Ubuntu version I was running at the time. I want to say it was 16.04.1 with kernel 4.4, but that might be wrong. I was able to pull several channels though. That much I do remember.

installed and ran w-scan. It seems happy, reports no errors, but finds no channels.

Also, this dmesg output is different. Only change I made was putting RAM in proper slots on motherboard.

I just hit a similar problem risc errors on my new motherboard, Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3, with Ryzen CPU and QuadHD DVB card.

I have reported the issue to Hauppauge see :

Funny, I had that same motherboard and a Ryzen 3 1200. Not much better with the ASRock board, but at least 17.10 installed on it okay, or so it seems. In the end, it doesn't seem to work either. I'm thinking it's something Ryzen specific (what is the processor microcode that gets flagged in "system info"? I should have stayed "old school". I may try this exercise one more time with an AM3 board and an FX-series processor. I've been beating my head on this for far too long!
