building only backend

Hi is it possible to build only the backend and the backend dependencies via the current build system? I'd appreciate some guidance.

There used to be options in ./configure for building only a
backend or frontend, but they've been removed. It was
neither recommended nor supported. At least in 0.28-pre
that's true. If your version still supports it, don't.
