I have mythfrontend-20200227-arm64-v31-Pre-1953-ged3bfa425a.apk installed on my Shield TV with a V31 backend.
It's been working fine with stereo only. To get 5.1 working I have to experiment. I'm using AudioTrack and on Digital capability I notice that Dolby Digital and DTS talk about must have a digital audio connection the rest like E-AC3 say must have HDMI connection.
So my solution was E-AC3 only checked and 5.1 on. Now I have 5.1 surround working.
My setup is Shield TV HDMI -> AV Receiver HDMI in -> AV passes video to TV via HDMI and drives speakers.

Re: Shield TV 5.1 Audio
For me this still applies to mythfrontend-20200323-arm64-v31.0.apk
Re: Shield TV 5.1 Audio
I have been using a 2019 Shield TV for sometime which works fine for Leanfront but not for the Frontend (due to being 32 bit, which is a known issue).
Just bought a Shield TV Pro (64 bit) which again works great with Leanfront but I cannot get Surround sound to work with the Frontend,
Are the audio settings mentioned in the above post still the recommended?

Re: Shield TV 5.1 Audio
Not sure I can help. I've moved on to v32 and I only use Leanfront on the FireTV 4K. While Nvidia Shield TV does work well on Mythfrontend 64 bits, the 2017 version's remote is terrible. I've pulled my Shield from use and threw it into the back of the closet of useless junk.

mythfrontend-20220307-arm64-v32.0-6-ge78a0c0042 ShieldTV Pro latest version - Software version 9.02
Sorted - it works if the Shield is persuaded not to process audio just pass it through. in Advanced sound settings - Set "Match content audio resolution".
In the Frontend > Setup Wizard > audio > Select AudioTrack and 5.1 with nothing set in the other boxes.
The frontend seems reliable, the 32 bit version failed randomly within an hour. Will report if this is not true long term.
