WinTV QuadHD PCIe card showing two USB adapters

Post by pigeon35 »

Hello,

I'm trying to put together a MythTV box and bought a WinTV QuadHD PCIe card which isn't playing ball. Hoping for some help please!
EDIT:
Below were links to hauppauge and linuxtv and screenshots of the card, but seems thats not allowed so have put text instead.
WinTV-quadHD model 01607 (according to website)
WinTV-quadHD DVB-T/T2/C 178100 LF RevA1I6 (could be RevA1l6 - lower case L instead of upper case i) (according to sticker on card).

Running Ubuntu 22.04.1 with hauppage PPA and weirdly (to me) it sees the card as WinTV DualHD USB device with only 2 adapters.
I've contacted Hauppage, but perhaps someone here has experienced this / others can say things which Hauppauge might not.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:b-rad/kernel+mediatree+hauppauge
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-mediatree
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-hauppauge

sudo apt install mythtv
sudo apt install mythplugins

apt policy mythtv
mythtv:
Installed: 2:32.0+fixes.20220325.f69ce764b7-0ubuntu1

Below is output from dmesg, lspci, lsusb
I've seen people refer to Conexant, but don't see anything in relation to it.

Only shows two adapters, not four it should.

I searched for quadHD posts and didn't find this scenario which doesn't bode well I'm guessing.

Fingers crossed!

Re: WinTV QuadHD PCIe card showing two USB adapters

I would think the product has been put in wrong box.
"factory refurbished" item?
Hard to see how it could be misidentified on cold start & successfully load firmware & appear as USB device unless it actually is that..

You are using the manufacturer's kernel models (PPA) & their firmware (not really necessary now & a pain if using Nvidia GPU etc).

Hauppauge did make a dual USB tuner on a PCI card in past (Nova-500) so is possible they make a dual USB on a PCIe card.

Thank you for replies. Card was purchased new only last week from hauppauge dot co dot uk

Hard to see how it could be misidentified on cold start & successfully load firmware & appear as USB device unless it actually is that.

I did wonder, when only two tuners were found with zero mention of conexant (which I saw in other posts for this card going back a few years), whether it had/has two tuners from one provider and two from another.
But then the whole usb thing. It's a pcie x1 card, sat in an pcie x4 slot. How does that register as a USB device anyway. Admittedly that is well beyond my abilities (ie maybe its perfectly normal / cheap n bodgy).

Code: Select all

mythtvee@mythtv:/media/files/backup$ ls -l /dev/dvb/*/*

There are also PCIe cards with USB interfaces on them so a PCIe card reporting USB devices should be possible.
However, the "ls /dev/dvb/*/*' does show definitely only two tuners so my best guess is that your card is broken.

Do you have a Window PC handy you can try it in just to make sure it is broken?

It's not unusual for manufactures to change the used components like tuners but still call it by the same name. It could just be it's using new components and the Linux driver is miss-identifying it.

Sometimes you can get lucky and just pass a different tuner or card parameter to the module. At the moment it looks like it's being identified as using card=99 or do you have two cards in that system?

Code: Select all

[ 4.262935] em28xx 3-1:1.0: Identified as Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD DVB (card=99)
Unfortunately I don't see any mention of your QuadHD card here or anything with a USB ID of 2040:8265 or eb1a:8174

Does this look like what you have?
https://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pics/quadhd_dvb_english.jpg

Notice the different numbers on the label 166100LF compared to what you have 178100 LF ?

That image is from here

I'm going to try this next, to create a partition from free space and install Win10.......fingers crossed :)

There are two pcie slots, one with a Qualcomm Atheros WiFi card and the other with the WinTV QuadHD card. There are no other video/radio/TV expansion cards or USB devices (beyond a RF receiver for keyboard).
I don't see any mention of your QuadHD card here or anything with a USB ID of 2040:8265 or eb1a:8174
Oohh, thats a great link. Wish I'd googled that before buying lol
I saw others had success years ago and naively figured "things will have only improved too". Old enough and ugly enough to know better.

Does this look like what you have?
It looks very similar, but the sticker is different (my device says 178100 LF). Plus at the other end, the chip layout is clearly very different.
It's a shame I'm not allowed to post URL links and image links on this forum, but appreciate it can lead to problems.

I'm going to try and free up some space and install Windows 10 and just see if it works generally. I'm guessing it probably will and it looks like the card has been changed just enough to not be functioning as it should. But one way to find out.
Will confirm back.

My suspicion is there are older QuadHD cards based on CX23887/8 chipset like the ones detailed on the LinuxTV wiki which will work with standard Linux kernels 4.8 or newer. There is picture on the wiki page with the older version with the heat sink removed though.
https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ ... VB-T/T2/C)

The newer one seems to be based on a em28xx chipset and is not supported out of the box in Linux. You would think the Hauppauge PPA would have updated support but that depends on a driver being available and for it to be updated for this particular card. The fact the em28xx driver seems to miss-recognise the card as Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD DVB makes me wonder if it just needs to be updated to support the new USB ID's?

There is a third card that is for the USA with an ATSC tuner but if you bought it from the UK Hauppauge website I don't think they would have sent you that one.

Testing in Windows will at least prove the card is working OK and is a Quad card.

You could try and get some clarification from Hauppauge but I've heard a few times that can be a frustrating experience

OK, bit of a pallava getting Windows 10 installed. I had set the drive originally to use a GPT partition table which apparently Windows 10 won't do unless its UEFI (which I wont do  )

Anyway, used Rufus to install Windows 10 onto a bootable USB stick. Happy days.

And Windows 10 22H2 January 23 patched with the latest version of WinTV v10 installed.

Device Manager reports it to be......"Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD DVB (Bulk Mode)"
Driver 5.2022.927.40271
USB\VID_2040&PID_8265\0014208070
USB28274_2920eHCW.ntAMD64

I tuned 142 channels and set four simultaneous recordings. A separate MUX for each recording. It only recorded two (with no errors / messages presented to the end user).
Delving into the log files and of the two missing recordings, it simply said:
"Deleting non-existent (local) recording: The Inspector Lynley Mysteries"
"Deleting non-existent (local) recording: QI XL"

I then tried the 4 screen PiP mode, which unsurprisingly worked on 2 screens only. Again, no obvious error presented to the end user, it just didn't work on the other 2 screens.

One of the log files shows "dwCount" shows 2 usb. USB index 0 and 1.

Very interesting your point on America ATSC. On the hauppauge website. Go to Support. Then Win10/11 drivers.
And there are two sections; European products + North America products
North America has "Old model 16xxx" and "New model 17xx after August 2022"
European products just has "Old model 16xxx"

Will wait and see what they say.
