It seems that the method for getting a Bluetooth headset to work under MythTV's frontend I described here:

is no longer viable, as bluez apparently does not support ALSA anymore.
Does anyone have alternative setup suggestions or a workaround for this? Is it maybe possible to use ALSA:pulse or PulseAudio:default in the MythTV settings for this somehow?
The Bluetooth headset works (although not in high definition yet) in things like VLC using bluez.

I personally can't get it installed without errors using the instructions provided under the link below, but if someone else with more "build from source" experience can give it a go on Mythbuntu 16.04 or later and get it installed properly and report back, I would appreciate it:
