Watch TV not working

Post by gcook12 »

When I hit watch tv, I momentarily get a please wait banner that disappears and no tv. I have an HDHOMERUN decoder that I use wifi. Any ideas what may be the problem? I power cycled the hdhomerun and it did not help

There are many possible causes of the momentary please wait.

Does it go back to the main menu or do you just have a blank screen ?

If it goes back the the main menu, try going into Programme Guide, move down to a channel and hit the "m" (menu key), you will get a pop menu, one of the options being "Watch this Channel" then press select, the selected channel should now play.

It goes back to the main menu. When I did what you suggested, it momentary shows please wait and then returns to the previous screen.

The best idea for diagnosing this sort of thing is the logs, primarily on the frontend, but potentially on the backend as well. The easiest way to start is to run the frontend from an xterm session with "-v playback" added to the commandline and see if anything useful appears there. If not, you may have to add other "-v" options.

7 lines from the end is the critical message, the one with the C. The backend stopped on a signal.

Code: Select all

May 20 15:08:35 gcook12-Aspire-5253 mythbackend: mythbackend[1112]: C CoreContext signalhandling.cpp:305 (handleSignal) Received Terminated: Code 0, PID 1, UID 0, Value 0x00000000
Does this happen every time LiveTV is used?

Mention your distribution and version and MythTV version. Like Ubuntu 18.04 and MythTV Version : v30-Pre-628-g862e510f58
The second one is from mythbackend --version.

As Gribnif mentioned, the frontend log for the same time period may help folks here see what's wrong.

Finally, is the frontend on the same host as the backend?

The above are frontend logs from two different hosts. But you need to
do what this error message says:

Code: Select all

May 20 18:07:01 gcook12-Aspire-5253 mythfrontend.real: mythfrontend[15158]: E CoreContext livetvchain.cpp:289 (GetEntryAt) It appears that your backend may be misconfigured. Check your backend logs to determine whether your inputs, lineups, channels, or storage configuration are reporting errors. This issue is commonly caused by failing to complete all setup steps properly. You may wish to review the documentation for mythtv-setup.
We're looking for a backend log at the same time as the failure.

Here's another way to get a fresh log: stop the backend with systemctl as you've done before.
Clear out the existing log with: cat /dev/null | sudo tee /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log
Start the backend with systemctl and attempt to watch LiveTV again.

Put the backend log here. Attach it or put it in code blocks by highlighting
the output and clicking on the 4th icon from the left, the one that has: </>
in it.

The 3rd command in the box here: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=2610&start=30#p12864

You want to stop the backend, then clear the log restart it, attempt to watch TV and attach the log.

Thanks, that helps. I am sorry but now the screen is locked on the main menu page, the one that says Optical disks, watch tV, program guide, and setup. is there a way to terminate the program without power cycling the computer?

Probably too late, but from a terminal window, pkill mythfrontend.
May need to add sudo and depending on your system, it may be
mythfrontend.real that you want to kill. man pkill will explain.

Trying to post the log but I think I may be missing a command. Here is what I have thus far

1. Stop Mythbackend with the following command
sudo systemctl stop mythtv-backend
2. Clear out the existing log with this command
cat /dev/null | sudo tee /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log
3. Create a fresh log with this command
sudo mythbackend -u mythtv --logpath /tmp
4 Restart mythbackend with this command
systemctl

That last one does not look right, should it be something else and are the other commands correct?

I had the exact same issue when i was setting up my mythtv. The cause of my problem was that the mythtv user/group did not have privileges to read and write to the file that i had designated as my storage directory.
I fixed it using the chown command to give the parent folder to mythtv, then used chmod g+rw /filetreelocation/ to give it read and write privileges. Hope that helps.
