hvr-1265 ntsc sound problem

Post by jackrippah »

My cable provider provides a ntsc analog group of channels that I would like to be able to tune. I bought a Hauppauge HVR-1265 because I only had a pcie slot available and Hauppauge supplied a driver. Using the Hauppauge supplied Linux driver for the 16.04 Xenial with kernel 4.4 the tuner works fine and tunes all the available analog channels - but - I have been unable to access the audio for the video. I'm using a Dell Optiplex 3020 - with on the mother board audio controller. After considerable Googling and trying various combinations of audio configurations I'm out of ideas... has anyone had success with the hvr-1265 tuning analog channels ? Suggestions on the problem? Thanks in advance.

Is the problem in the recording or the playback? You could find out by locating the recording file and playing it with VLC or Parole or other media player. Do you get sound from that? Do you get sound at all from the computer?

Really sorry I missed your response to my post. Again - Sorry

I ran the test you suggest. I should have said that in my original post. I moved the file to another host and ran it with VLC and no sound... I should have also said that myth will play other video files that I have loaded (avi - mp4) with video and sound fine. Also, it will also play recordings from HDHomerun with sound and video fine. I guess I was left with the conclusion that the Hauppauge driver might not support audio on analog channels even they implied that it would support NTSC with sound and video (see: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/linux.html). But cockpit is always a possibility. I have not tried the card on the Windows platform or my running mythtv system to eliminate a hardware problem with the card but it is a new card. Perhaps I will try that this afternoon if I have time.

In any event I really appreciate your taking the time to respond pgvennett even if I have to admit failure in the end. I've put a ton of time into this problem, I am highly motivated to get this working. It would really be a great machine to run mythtv on.

I'm not familiar with this card how does the analog tuner present itself. Does it show up as a standard V4l2 device? See if it shows up if you run

Code: Select all

v4l2-ctl --all
If it does then there are lots of V4l2 tools to query and set the various parameters to see if the card is working correctly. I've used the V4L2 Test Bench to test some V4l2 devices but they were all just frame capture devices not sure if it will be able to tune an analog tuner but work looking into.

And for what it is worth and I'm way out of my depth here but the 'get audio out' looks interesting, no?

root@mythtv-3020:/home/jack# v4l2-ctl --get-audio-input
Audio input : 2 (TV)

root@mythtv-3020:/home/jack# v4l2-ctl --get-audio-output
VIDIOC_G_AUDOUT: failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

root@mythtv-3020:/home/jack# v4l2-ctl --list-audio-outputs
ioctl: VIDIOC_ENUMAUDOUT

root@mythtv-3020:/home/jack# v4l2-ctl --list-audio-inputs
ioctl: VIDIOC_ENUMAUDIO
Input : 0
Name : Baseband L/R 1

Input : 1
Name : Baseband L/R 2

Input : 2
Name : TV

** News flash ** my cable provider (Charter) must have been flowing this thread because I got a note in the mail yesterday announcing that they are going 100% encrypted digital on February 27th thereby obviating my search for a fix for my analog audio problem.
Now the quest begins for the best mythtv solution for the encrypted tv problem... God I really hate these frigging guys.
