4K UHD TV Connecting at 30 Hz via HDMI

Post by jamoody » Mon Nov 14, 2016 10:33 pm

I'm not (yet) satisfied with the picture quality on my new 4K UHD TV (Samsung UN49KS8000FXZA) and just discovered that the HDMI connection is connected at 30 Hz so all the 2x deinterlacers won't work. Any ideas how I can get to 60 Hz? My video card is GeForce GT 730 and I'm running Nvidia driver 364.19 on Mythbuntu 14.04.4. Some reports indicate 30Hz is the best HDMI will do but I find that hard to believe. They also report DisplayPort allows up to 60Hz but as far as I know my TV doesn't have DisplayPort (but I don't actually know what DisplayPort is). Several questions:

1) If I can get to 60 Hz will the video quality be better? (I assume yes)
2) Is it technically possible for HDMI to get to 60Hz?
3) Assuming I can in fact get to HDMI 60Hz, how do I do so? With a special modeline override?

Thanks for any pointers.

After much investigation and help from others it looks like my video card (GT 730) only supports HDMI 1.4 and not HDMI 2.0 which is required to get to 60Hz. If I upgrade my video card to GTX 1050 which supports HDMI 2.0 can I expect a better 1080i/720p picture on my 4K SUHD TV or am I just wasting my money?

I am also having an issue with interlacing lines on my GT710 on a 4K UHD TV. What was the fix for this? I can't seem to get it to work very well at all?!
