How does one get smooth playback for larger than HD displays

I have a 2560x1600 display. I have tried an ATI card and an NVIDEA card, and gone through the possible rendering methods & de-interlacers. I have been unable to get smooth playback without dropped frames and/or tearing.
What works with higher than HD displays?

EVGA GeForce GTX760.
Primary monitor is a Dell 3008WFP connected via dual link DVI.
Secondary monitor is a really crummy BenQ XL2420T connected via DisplayPort.
Motherboard is Asus P6T Delux with 6 GB memory.

I should have enough horse power for a smooth display.

I use mythfrontend on the 27" iMac daily and it works just fine, both under macos and Linux. AMD 6970 card. But it obviously would be even better with an nvidia card

If you're not using nVidia's own driver, you should be. That could fix the problem for you. The open source driver may 'work' but it's nowhere near all there yet. Oh, and disable all desktop effects - they often get in the way of playback too.

I was using Nvideas driver, but the question is moot at the moment. Due to misguided attempt to upgrade ubuntu while running the cinnamon UI (I hate unity), the Ubuntu updater uninstalled cinnamon which caused a crash and wiped out my instalation.
I am now in the process of rebuilding my system under mint (they don't seem to want to convert my desktop into a tablet). I was planning to make this change anyway, but it is happening sooner than I intended.

That Nvidia card should have no problem playing videos smoothly. Make sure you have installed and activated support for VDPAU.
