Here's are two images of what the menu looks like for me on the Mythbuntu 28.7 theme:
Note the fuzz shadow around the text that is about as big as the letters themselves. And those splotches appear and disappear as you change menu selections. Also the vertical bands are a new problem too.

Re: Updated mythbuntu theme version 28
It seems like a problem with the TV diplay:
- No 1:1 pixel mapping (I see some overscan) -- the TV is scaling the image, which can cause artifacts (like banding). I think you need to change the TV display mode to what Samsung calls "Just Scan".
- TV may be doing some edge enhancement (sharpness), noise reduction, or other type of processing that's intended for broadcast TV/DVD video but is usually bad for computer output. Check your TV's menus and disable these "features".
Re: Updated mythbuntu theme version 28
Thanks, ggervasio. The sharpness setting did indeed turn out to be the primary problem. And I had gotten the same advice from Thomas on the mailing list. Decreasing the sharpness mostly got rid of the artifacts. But there was still some vertical banding remaining, even with the sharpness "off" (at zero). And I wanted to increase the sharpness a little anyway, so it wasn't at zero. I looked at the background alone on my PC in Photoshop and it still looked a little moire-ish, which I'm not a fan of anyway. So I created my own background that is just a single solid color and that works great for me. I'm going to attach it here to this message so anyone can use it who finds a similar issue. Just download the file and replace the one in ~/.mythtv/themes/Mythbuntu/

Oh, and for anyone wondering what I used to check the TV settings, here's the URL:
http://tweakguides.com/HDTV_14.html
There's a really good sharpness test image that I used Firefox to do a view image and then F11 to go full screen with the image.
