I - too - have always favored Nvidia under linux due to their solid closed source drivers and AMD's rather weak closed source drivers. If I were buying hardware, I would have bought Nvidia for this build, but I was just using whatever I had in my closet. In the last few years I have heard good things about the progress of open source mesa drivers though. According to the
RadeonFeature page "Video Decode (VDPAU/OpenMax) on UVD" ought to work on my chipset.
From another forum I got similar advice and tried the following which still didn't work, but did give me some more console output (none of which appears useful in solving my problem)

There was also a suggestion that it might be a RFE-MBE version mismatch, but I'm not quite sure what that is. Seeing that I am running fresh installs straight from the mythbuntu ISO on both the front and backend, I suspect version mismatches are going to be relatively unlikely.
Any further thoughts?
