Clean Install: Frontend never starts

Hey all,

Brand new 14.04 nstall on an AMD CPU and radeon graphics, running mesa drivers. 8gb ram.

Backend is up and running properly on my server. I already have a main HTCP running the XBMC plugin that works perfectly. (well, there are a few minor bugs, but nothing major)

Just threw together a new rig from spare parts for a bedroom TV. Did a frontend only install. System boots up fine. First time config, including database and login information was successful.

Problem is, mythfrontend never starts.

PS shows that it is running, but nothing ever shows up on screen:

Can anyone suggest what I might do to troubleshoot?

While some users may claim success, AMD graphics have always been problematic for Linux. Try running mythfrontend with the option "-O ThemePainter=qt".

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately it didn't help.

I - too - have always favored Nvidia under linux due to their solid closed source drivers and AMD's rather weak closed source drivers. If I were buying hardware, I would have bought Nvidia for this build, but I was just using whatever I had in my closet. In the last few years I have heard good things about the progress of open source mesa drivers though. According to the RadeonFeature page "Video Decode (VDPAU/OpenMax) on UVD" ought to work on my chipset.

From another forum I got similar advice and tried the following which still didn't work, but did give me some more console output (none of which appears useful in solving my problem)

There was also a suggestion that it might be a RFE-MBE version mismatch, but I'm not quite sure what that is. Seeing that I am running fresh installs straight from the mythbuntu ISO on both the front and backend, I suspect version mismatches are going to be relatively unlikely.

Any further thoughts?

Hmm,

Could this explain the problem?

Error creating VDPAU device: 1
Will the frontend fail to load without vdpau? I would have thought it would load fine but be slow when playing content if vdpau were acting up.

If the frontend is compiled with VDPAU support, it will need the VDPAU libraries installed to run.

Alright, so I have confirmed vdpau is working by using mplayer -vo vdpau.

Any other theories why this might not be working?

I just did another clean install to no avail... ;(

Alright, I still have no idea why it wasn't working, but on a whim, I deleted the entire .mythtv folder in my user home folder, and viola, everything suddenly works.

There must be something wrong with how the original config files were created on install for my machine, and letting mythtv recreate them on their own just magically fixed everything.
