What Card Or Box To Buy?

Post by Sheri »

Hi
I am new to the MythTV thing my computer is a Acer Desktop PC ASE380-UD420A you can see more about it here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6883103059

I am not sure what kind or type adapter I need to buy to work with MythTV I live in the USA and currently have cable TV but am thinking of switching to DISH. I would like to use my computer to record like I use to use my VCR then make the stored recordings available to a Raspberry Pi with OpenElec installed.

Thanks in advance.

All I do is OTA. Last time I scanned i got 90+ atsc channels. Just never saw a need to pay for TV. For cable, you need a product that supports cable card. I think one of the HD-Homerun boxes does that. Not sure about Dish sat.

I have Comcast cable with a Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 cablecard tuner connected to a ZOTAC Mini-ITX D2550ITXS-B-U computer.

The WinTV-HVR-955Q will not work with most cable tv channels. With Comcast in South Florida, it will not work with any channels since Comcast has encrypted all channels (no Clear QAM channels). Generally with cable tv in the USA, a cablecard tuner is needed.

This is good to know thanks.

How can I tell if I have any Clear QAM channels is their a way to tell?

Currently we have NO boxes from our cable company we had just one on a older tube type TV but that is now gone and so is the little black box that was used to get channels.

Thanks.

It is best to ask your cable tv provider if or how long clear QAM will be used. I imagine if you connect a modern high definition tv with no cable box, cablecard, adapter, or any other hardware and if you get the channels you want in high definition, then they are clear QAM. Standard definition could be clear QAM or analog.

It appears that others have recently had trouble with hvr-955q-19x5-22x5-kernel-3.16-2015-01-23.patch. viewtopic.php?t=221&p=2554

I have no idea how to tell the difference between standard definition and high definition channels I rather take a beating than to call our cable provider first you have to spend 15 minutes getting past the computer that answers the phone...

Does the 955q support analog? There seems to be a general air of it being fully supported, but according to http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/H ... V-HVR-955Q analog doesn't work, and I was just wondering if that is current or not. Alternately, is there a recommended hybrid usb tuner that is fully supported for both analog and digital?
