TBS5520SE & HP Compaq tc4400 Tablet PC???

Post by pseud »

Hello Folks

I've been lurking here on and off for years...

Anyway, recently I've resuscitated an old tablet pc into a bit of a media server. It seemed such a nice bit of kit and I rather liked the idea of the old Waycom touchscreen as an input device, also it has this old docking station with 1080p DVI out (which is all I'm ever going to want). At the moment it's running squeezebox and nextcloud and backing things up.

I asked TBS what came out of the USB on their TBS5520SE.
Given this tablet has no slots etc. The response was:
Our USB box output is the orignal TS stream MPTS . if you have any
more question please feel free to ask us
I maxed the processor on the tablet and memory (still small by today) and this is what I have in it:

Code: Select all

And. so the question is - will the processor on the tablet cope with decoding and playing out the video to the DVI that comes in through the USB from the TBS5520SE?

Many thanks,
Morgan

AFAIK, MPTS is basically mpeg-2. There is no decoding required of the input stream. Its stored in its original mpeg-2 format to disk. Video output will depend on the graphics chipset you have in the tablet and whatever the video source format is, Most will do 1080 HD these days without much problem. there's a minimum requirement spec in the wiki. But my first frontend box was an old Duron 800 with a real cheap video card, One of my current frontends is an old Athlon II dual core using bulit in GF8200 chipset and it works fine at 1080 HD and it's over 10 years old.

Thanks Steve & Wes, I'll see if I can crank up my post rate :)
Wes, your quote of the old Athlon II dual core seems a few clicks over my old Core2 T7600. I had a quick compare with a AMD Athlon II X4 655 on cpu benchmark and it rates the Athlon at 2078 clicks cf 758...
But what you say about MPTS suggests there's not a lot of lifting to be done - so, I'll stride on :)
Thx

PS it seems that MPTS stands for Multi-Programme Transport Stream and is discussed in a Wiki article MPEG Transport Streams... It seems like the broadcast multiplex

Wes, looking at the wiki I've found a page titled 'Intel Integrated Graphics' which gives me some concern - I wonder if you could comment.
The chipset on the machine is:
Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset
With:
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

I think the 945 comes before the 965 which in the table on the 'Intel Integrated Graphics' page is listed as 'Limited Skips' under '1080i playback.'

So, I wonder whether this will play 1080p properly?

Thanks.

I've never used Intel graphics. last intel chip I used was an old old 8088 or86. Switched to Cyrix and AMD and never looked back.

Well, the HP Compaq tc4400 Tablet PC wasn't bought as a media server...
Perhaps I'll have to drag out the similarly vintage HP ML150 G3 tower and cobble them together somehow :)
