Newer Hauppauge 1250,2250s not supported in linux (yet)

Post by mikitz »

Just a warning to the mythtv community, don't buy brand new Hauppauge tuners for a linux system. The HVR-1250 is actually a HVR-1265 and the HVR-2250 is actually a HVR-2255. Hauppauge did the upgrade without changing the box. Not an issue for windows users, but there is no linux support for these cards (yet).

I am setting up Mythtv for a friend who has a Hauppauge HVR-2250 dual tuner card. I tried installing the alternate firmware by Steve Toth but Mythbuntu is still not detecting the card correctly.

Here is the result of dmesg|grep saa7164

Code: Select all

[   11.045626] saa7164[0]:    card=10 -> Hauppauge WinTV-HVR2200

[ 11.046397] saa7164_initdev() Unsupported board detected, registering without firmware
Is the above asking me to update a file with the line card=<n>? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You do not have a 2250, you have a 2255 (which is not currently supported by LinuxTV DVB drivers).

See the discussion at viewtopic.php?f=29&t=221&start=15&hilit=hvr2250 regarding someone else who got the "new generation" HVR-2255 rather than the HVR-2250.

Thanks for catching it. This means staples.ca sold a 2255 under the name 2250. Hope they return it!

By the way, how did you figure out it was a 2255? Is it the rev: 129? What output can you expect with a real 2250?

As mentioned in the referenced topic post, the saa7164 subsystem 0070:f111 is apparently assigned to the 2255. The number 2255 is (probably) also on the card itself (somewhere, in small writing). Since Hauppuage only officially supports Windows (and I would bet the box indicates a requirement for Windows), and as their latest drivers support both the older and newer cards, it does not matter to their target customers what the internal chipsets are, or how they are coded. Only those that run alternative OSs care. I will note that I have not seen a post in the other topic from the person that was going to see about the schedule for Linux drivers from the developer.

Thanks for the direction Gary. I read the post thoroughly. Is anyone having good success using a PCI or PCIe dual tuner card that ISN'T Hauppauge? The mythtv site mentions the DViCO FusionHDTV7 and KWorld DVB-T PC160-2T. Anyone have experience with either of these? How is the tuning quality compared to Hauppauge?

I've been using 3 of the Dvico Fusion HDTV7 Dual express cards for years and they've worked great. But I can't find a place to buy them and I don't read Korean.

Since you're in Canada, nothing "DVB" will be of any use.

So I bought a Hauppauge HVR-1250 with the single tuner hoping to sidestep the issue. Nope! Inside was a 1265. There was even a bloody picture of a 1250 card on the package, but inside it was clearly labelled 1265. At this point, there is no linux support for new Hauppauge tuners.
(at least they could have changed the graphic on the box!)

And there are indications that there will not be any time soon. Hauppauge apparently has a Commercially licensed/priced driver. Not so much free and open (so, technically, they meet the letter of their announcement, but not so much the spirit of Linux).

At this point, the best recommendation has to be to choose another vendor until Hauppauge decides to step up and support their products in Linux.

I'm new here and I'm thinking about giving MythTV a try to see if I like it better than Windows Media Center. I currently have three Hauppauge 2250 dual tuner cards in a WMC box and I want to make sure they'll work in MythTV. They're the original 2250s and not the newer 2255 replacements.

I also have a Ceton InfiniTV6 and a SiliconDust HRHomeRun Prime. Will these also work? I'm on Verizon FIOS so all of my subscribed channels are copy freely.

If I am interpreting this http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-media ... 84383.html post correctly, patches may be released in a few weeks (or so) upstream. That should allow people to build their own driver modules until such time as the code gets integrated into your distros shipping kernel(s). As always, your mileage (and availability date(s)) will vary.

What is the status of driver support for 2255s? Are the patches available out there?

I too received a Hauppauge 2255 rather than the 2250 I'd ordered, and (of course) am trying to somehow get this functioning BEFORE our Directv setup is 'gone for good' next month (... saving me quite a bundle in the long run, no doubt..). So... is there anyway I can somehow 'sign up' for some sort of a notification process when this driver is finally available..? In truth, I'd MUCH prefer Mythbuntu over what I'll now have to do: build a damned Windows "media box" in the interim, instead. Puleeze... I certainly hope this is not far from release. God knows what I think of MS and Windows in total... but I ain't goin' there... And in the meantime, I'll continue to return here in hopes of somehow getting to run MythTV instead of Windows Media Center (blech!).
And just for "S & G" (ain't goin' there, either ...) I JUST sent email to Hauppauge about this, since I just now checked Hauppauge's support pages for the 2255 and found a 'link' where I was able to find a contact (davidz@hauppauge.com) since it appears from this driver page that (apparently) there is a European driver already released..(?) Hey - if it's there, I'll try it.. but hopefully we'll all be 'rewarded' with a functional, capable Linux driver for the 2255 .. MY fingers are crossed, anyway...

UPDATE:
Only minutes ago, David Z from Hauppauge replied to my email and forwarded a request for an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) for the 'proprietary' drivers they now have available for those (like me) who are 'experimenting' with the 2255 and MythTV/Mythbuntu...
In hopes this is going to work until they release the 'public version' "... within the next few months ..." (as DavidZ implies in the email), all I can say is: "we shall see...". Now I have my fingers crossed that these drivers are made available shortly, and they work well...
i'll do my best to keep this updated as I 'experiment' with these drivers...
