Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-HD-S2 - Mythtv 0.29/ubuntu 18.04 - no channels

Post by plainfaceboy » Tue Feb 04, 2020 7:05 pm

Hi - so after various attempts, and some help from here, I finally got confirmation my old HVR4000 card was toast so set about replacing it with 3 separate cards.
DVB-T - all good, no issues, works out of the box.

I got a Nova S2 for satellite as assumed it would be pretty much exactly the same as the HVR4000 - which had worked well.
I've reinstalled with 18.04 (which was new for me) and Mythtv 0.29 - and the card installs fine, but I can't get it to find *any* channels.
I've seen other posts about this - but no solution.
Mythtv sees it, and does everything fine - apart from finding channels.
I've tried firmware from Hauppauge, the old firmware (same as HVR4000 - from https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ ... V-HVR-4000)
and I've tried installing other bits of software and manual scans, I've tried removing the other cards and trying different slots - but all to no avail.

So I've now got another fresh install and am hoping to get this working - has any got any tips or hints?

(and if I can get through this I'll move on to the analogue capture card :D )
Thanks.

Check outside of mythtv that the card works.
It is fairly easy to do e.g.
make sure mythtv-backend is stopped

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl stop mythtv-backend
use w_scan utility

Code: Select all

sudo apt install w-scan
find out adapter number of your Nova S2 card using

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep frontend
using the adapter number run w_scan (note the _ character), replacing the <n> with your adapter number, this is for Astra28E2 (UK Sky/Freesat)
w_scan -cGB -a<n> -fs -sS28E2 -E0 -G >astra28e2
You should get something like the following within 20 seconds, if it is working (I stopped the scan after some output ctrl+c, it will take 30 minutes or so to run a full scan of the satellite).

Code: Select all

mike@1804-test:~$ w_scan -cGB -a4 -fs -sS28E2 -E0 -G >astra28e2
w_scan -cGB -a4 -fs -sS28E2 -E0 -G

Check dmesg output after running w_scan, there could be some error messages such a unable to load firmware or some other error that may give a clue as to why you cannot scan.

Well, I tried again, same results - dmesg no er proved the card actually seems to work.rors - firmware was loaded fine etc.
Was about to post results, but for no particular reason (other than general frustration) I unplugged all my cables, plugged them back in, rebooted and tried again, and hey presto - the scan worked.

Back into Mythtv - made sure LNB was connected, and got right settings in scan (10714000, and 10847000 for S2 etc) - it all worked 100%.

Maybe the connection between cable and card was dodgy? Other than that not sure what else might have changed - but glad I've got it working at last.
Thanks for the help Mike!

So I'll enjoy this for a few days, then move on to the PVR-150 for analogue capture :D
