Do IR receivers on HDHomeRun DUALs (HDHR-US) go bad?

Post by Vaska »

I have two HDHomeRun DUALs (Model HDHR-US) and that I can no longer use with LIRC.

They are under a desk, in a barely lit room, but yet irrecord complains when it checks for ambient light.

Code: Select all

Checking for ambient light creating too much disturbances.
Please don't press any buttons, just wait a few seconds...

Here is a lof of noise (2524 bytes received)
Running irrecord with this level of noise will not give good results.
Please try to turn off fluorescent lamps or tubes and other sources
of variable IR radiation and restart. If nothing else works, you
might have to mask the receiving IR diode. You REALLY should press
ctrl-C at this point, but it's technically possible to proceed
by pressing RETURN
I'm just curious if anyone else has had issues with this model and their IR receiver specifically as they've gotten older?

I'm also very curious about what people are using for an IR receiver with LIRC these days. I can't seem to find a good, out of the box USB IR receiver and I'm just not crafty enough to solder one together myself :(

Everything goes bad.

SiliconDust can troubleshoot a lot of issues remotely. You just tell the HDHR to send diagnostics, then open a ticket with your device serial number.

I've gotten the impression that LIRC is kind of "going away" lately, though I doubt that matters if you're having the issues you describe.

I'm not sure why you're looking at IR vs Bluetooth.

I just use a wireless keyboard. I don't care that it's "big", and I use the actual keyboard enough that I prefer it over a remote anyway.

Yeah, you're probably right, the two HDHR-US's are probably just showing their age. They still work great for OTA ATSC broadcast though. I'd really like to find an IR receiver so I can use a single uiversal remote to control my TV, AV receiver, Apple TV and MythTV. I found a thread in this forum mentioning the Tira 2.1 device which looks great and has native support in LIRC so I think I might order one tomorrow.

I don't know anything about this other than the mythfrontend log includes some comments about looking for CEC devices or something. No idea if it's worth trying, but maybe worth knowing about.

The purpose of HDMI-CEC is to allow a single remote control or device to control other devices in a multimedia setup. It allows for both user-driven control of devices by remote control as well as automated actions performed by the devices on your behalf.

Yes. I use Tira 2.1(s) with RCA RCRP05BR 5-Device Universal remotes on two separate frontends.

The lirc-setup program produces a lirc_options.conf and a *.lircd.conf file. The README file directs you to copy those two files and I also copied my lircrc file to the following:

Code: Select all

         /etc
          |
          |
          |---lirc
                |
                |----------- lirc_options.conf
                |
                |----------- lircd.conf.d
                                  |
                                  |------- rcatira.lircd.conf

         home
          |
          |----$username
                   |
                   |-----------.lircrc

Unfortunately, I purchased these years ago. Good news is my second choice (USB-UIRT) appears to still be available at http://www.usbuirt.com/. Check eBay too -- a few USB-UIRTs are there for roughly half the cost.
