I have a very old FE/BE combo. It's running mythtv 0.24.1 on Fedora Core 12. It's been working quite well.
I'm paranoid that the disk is going to crap out one of these days, so I'm planning to upgrade parts or all of the hardware. I'm trying to decide between sticking with Fedora or switching to Ubuntu.
Current hardware:
CPU is an AMD Turion MT-34, I've currently got 2 GB of RAM. Output to my HDTV is through an Nvidia GeForce 210. I have an HDHomeRun for OTA channels and an HDPVR for recording from my DirecTV box.
Everything (OS, recordings, DB) are on a 2 TB drive. I'm definitely going to switch the OS and DB to a SSD and have the recordings on a separate drive. If I don't need to, I don't plan to purchase anything to replace the CPU/motherboard or the graphics card.
I've always used Fedora for my home systems. I'm considering switching to Ubuntu, only because many of the people I work with tend to use that these days. I'm not concerned about learning the ins and outs of Ubuntu vs. Fedora. I'm more concerned about good or bad hardware support. Will my old CPU, graphics card, tuners etc. work fine with the most recent release of Fedora or Ubuntu?
Thanks!

Re: Fedora or Ubuntu
i do have an older vid card (nvidia black 9800 gtx+), processor (amd dual core 3.4 athalon) and all of that and everything works awesome in fedora. i used 21 for a bit but when i installed kmod nvidia, there were issues at the time. if you dont need kmod, 21 is AWESOME! if you do need it, at least the last time i checked, there were issues so 20 works great too and is what i am currently using on all my systems.
i have tried ubuntu and fedora and dont see a lot of difference between the two in overall functioning. just like you said, the ins and outs. there is more overall support for ubuntu now because it is the dominant version of linux but personally, i love fedora so i am sticky with it at least for the foreseeable future.

Re: Fedora or Ubuntu
Use which ever you prefer. The only difference I've seen between the two, is that fedora gets newer opensource graphics drivers faster, as the devs seem to mostly work in upstream at Fedora. For example, my old intel mini mac, when running Linux Mint (based on ubuntu) the Mesa libs are only at version 1.x, while on fedora they were on 2.x, with the corresponding increase in GL functionality. Same goes for my laptop(s) with Intel / Intel HD embedded graphics chipset
Re: Fedora or Ubuntu
Well, I do have HD recordings, so I assume I would want to use VDPAU. And the 5 minutes I spent googling leads me to think I would want to use the nvidia driver for that, not nouveau.
Thanks for the input.

I would be careful, unless you know a lot about mysql. I had a working system under Mint 16, but, because Mint 16 was not being updated, I tried a couple of Ubuntu distributions but cannot get past the

Re: Fedora or Ubuntu
Just tried a clean install of Linux Mint LMDE, that is Mint based only on Debian, hoping that that might be simpler. The only extra that I have installed is MythTV. Low and behold, I get the dreaded
result. Is there anyone out there who can help this non-MqSQL expert out of this fix? Why is this all so difficult? Kristok, if your Fedora works, stick with it, as Ubuntu is going to give you lots of grief, if my experience is anything to go by.Myth TV could not connect to the database
