Currently, I have the mythtv backend setup to get epg data from the OTA feed. I would like to use the information gathered by mc2xml (creates mc2xml.xml file). I have read the mythtv.org/wiki/Mythfilldatabase#External_XMLTV which tells me exactly how to populate the database from the xml file, but it says that I must set up the grabber first, explained on the xmltv page. There, it isn't clear to me how to configure the grabber for anything but xmltv. Is it as simple as setting the backend to "no grabber" since the mc2xml script is doing the grabbing? Is that even how this works?
Running Fedora 25, using the Hauppage pvr-2250 (dual tuner) ATSC capture card. I have everything installed/setup per mythtv.org instructions for fedora 21.
I'm fairly new to linux, I'm not any kind of code-person; my increasing distaste for windows is feeding my linux interest and efforts, despite the challenges thereof.
My understanding of the inner-workings of linux is weak at best.
Any help is appreciated,
-Cyril
the grabber, xmltv, & mc2xml
Re: the grabber, xmltv, & mc2xml
Setting "no grabber" in mythtv-setup for the appropriate Videosources will do what you want.
I presume you will be setting a cron job to run mc2xml and call mythfilldatabase, as described in the FAQ for mc2xml.
As a matter of interest why do you propose to use mc2xml instead of the more normal tv_grab_ series from the xmltv project for use with mythtv. There is likely to be greater support if you use one of these grabbers as opposed to mc2xml. For example as you are in the USA it is common to use Schedules Direct with tv_grab_sd_json (being replaced by tv_grab_zz_sdjson in xmltv 0.5.69, it is only a name change, no functional differences).

A cron job is indeed how I planned to update mythfilldatabase.MikeB2013 wrote:[ ... ] As a matter of interest why do you propose to use mc2xml instead of the more normal tv_grab_ series from the xmltv project for use with mythtv. Why mc2xml instead of other options? My cursory understanding is that the US xmltv setup leads back to schedules-direct, which require a subscription for access; thus far mc2xml does not require any subscription (I donated to the mc2xml project while using it for windows).
Your inquiry suggests that I should revisit the matter. I would honestly prefer to use the tools available directly through the program.
Thank you Mike,
