MythTV as a Security System DVR

Post by ulricken »

Hello All,

I'm exploring different applications to see what I need. Basically, I was given a free Security System, but it doesn't have DVR ability. I am wanting to build a Linux DVR for this, but I need a key factor in it.

The security system documentation states that I need the Red, White, Yellow cables to be plugged in a VCR. Since I know VCR's are scarce(and not to mention that if the tape is full, you will need to switch it out).

My goal is to find a PCI Card that has the Red, White, Yellow connectors, and a Linux OS that will be able to see and recognize what it does(which I am doing on the side).
The other abilities I'm trying to learn on my own are.
Does modern Linux OS recognize the Red, White, Yellow, Video/Audio PCI cards and if so, does it detect as Inbound or Outbound feed?
---Not expecting anyone here to answer this question, just throwing it out there----

My Point of this Post: Can I use the MythTV Service as a DVR to record from my security system? and if so, Can it use the PCI Card for the White, Yellow, Red cables to detect as the source feed, as long as the Linux Host is designed to capture the audio/video from that feed? as well as daily rotation of the videos or if that would need to be done in the Linux Host itself?

Simple answer is yes, as long as you are using a supported capture card. If you can record to a vcr, you can record to mythtv in linux. Yellow is composite video. Red and white are audio iirc. Check mythtv wiki for more info.

@ulricken,

You might want to look at https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythZoneMinder
which has a link to https://www.zoneminder.com . Not sure you want to
use MythTV if you're only doing security.
