I'm across the big pond from you in UK but BBC is having its charter examined right now so who knows where we will be in 5 years time? I'm also aware that I'm not fully appraised of all the issues.
I think there's an interesting bit in this document:

Could that allow competition by (say) Mythtv to the cable company kit or even Windows Media Player?

I've quoted that page several times on the mailing list. The big fear is that it will be used to close the so-called "analog hole." Namely, component output from cable boxes. Currently these are attached to things an HD PVR to create digital recordings. With SOC, that output can be selectively disabled if content provider so desires.PhilB wrote: I think there's an interesting bit in this document:
