Upgrade gotchas from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS?

Post by mathog »

Our MythTV box is currently using Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS, with kernel 5.4.0-97-generic, and mythtv 30.0+fixes.202103232211.7d297b1fb8~ubuntu18.04.1 amd64. I want to upgrade all of this software to current versions, which would be Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS, kernel (5.15.???), and mythtv 32.0+fixes. It currently uses lircd (not the kernel lirc) to handle commands from the remote control, and the kernel was not the standard one for 18.04.6, but a newer version needed to support the graphics on the AMD Rynzen 3 3200G.

Any suggestions/gotchas for this upgrade?

Ubuntu 22.04 apparently uses kernel 5.15 which is hypothetically a superset of 5.4, and should work. Should. I have occasionally been bitten on upgrades like this though when the newer kernel drops support for a device in the computer, and it comes up without support for the NIC or the graphics card. In one nasty case it dropped support for the storage controller, so the installer couldn't even see the system disks!

Thanks

my 2 cents worth...get to myth v31 on 18.04 first... the ppa for v31 has 18.04, 20.04, 22.04 packages. Plus backup database to another machine.

im on 18.04 as well. i did an os 16.04 to 18.04 and myth v29 to v31 upgrade recently. i'm going to upgrade to 20.04 soon . Ill run there for awhile then upgrade to 22.04 ..

I just did that yesterday. I went from Ubuntu 18.02 to Ubuntu 22.04 and mythv got upgraded from 28 (I think) to 32. I am using ir-keytables for remote control, and a HD Homerun Prime for tuners. I was anticipating a day or 2 to get everything resolved, but I was done long before noon on day 1. I used Ubuntu's do-release-upgrade twice (1st to 20.04, then again to 22.04). Didn't touch mythtv between OS upgrades. A few days earlier I did switch the grabber to use the new (to me) xmltv for Schedules Direct as the old method was no longer supported in mythtv 32.

After the upgrade, mythtv was saying all tuners were in use initially. Not sure what was causing that, but that seemed to fix itself. Mythweb didn't work initially due to apache trying to load an old php version that didn't exist anymore. But that was about it. Very smooth upgrade.
