Hi All, please bare with me as I am a relative newbie when it comes to mythtv.
My question is - is there a service api or a way to capture a live tv stream without using the frontend. For example you could write your own client (ie web based or phone app) that would be capable of watching live tv?
Thanks.

Not sure that I can directly answer your question, but they do provide a comprehensive list of API calls that can control and manipulate the backend: https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Services_API
For example, I've written a bash script that runs via cron to remove recordings older than 30 days using the DVR Service (I've already moved the recordings to a separate location by then for use with a Kodi library). Which brings me to the second point. Instead of rewriting a new frontend (unless you are very ambitious!), you can try out the plugin within Kodi or MrMC. I use MrMc on my Apple TV 4 devices and Kodi on my Windows PC. Of course they are available for most any platform out there though and work well as a frontend.
