Since this is not quite making the waves it is on the mailing list, I thought I would point to a discussion on the future of the plugins and MythTV frontend happening on the mailing list. It's sad news as far as I am concerned, so hopefully this will make more people aware of what is happening behind the scenes:
At least glad to see I am not the only one who still uses, really likes and would miss the features of the current FE and plugins. Hope this does not spell the beginning of the end for the project as a whole due to lack of developer time, etc.

Paul Harrison's April Fool's joke about removing mythfrontend seems to have been taken seriously by many folks. There are no plans for that, in fact we plan to expand the frontend to support Android TV devices like the NVidia Shield.
