Upgrading 0.27->0.28 plus moving to Mythbuntu 16.04
I have gotten fat and lazy on Mythbuntu 14.04 LTS with Mythtv 0.27. I am viewing with some trepidation upgrading to Mythtv 0.28 and ALSO upgrading to Mythbuntu 16.04.
On plain vanilla Ubuntu, moving to a more recent version can pretty easily be done on line. I don't see anything in Mythbuntu's release notes about doing something similar for this "flavor" of Ubuntu. And even tho going from Mythtv 0.27 to 0.28 looks like a small step, previous such upgrades have proven a bear for me.
Anyone made these upgrades? Any tips or tricks for the faint-hearted?

i upgrade from 27 to 28 no problem. just swap repositories in mythbuntu-control-centre and then do a sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. and it should just work.
upgrading to 16.04 LTS isn't "officially" supported yet, as upgrades between LTS versions happens when 16.04 hits 16.04.1 (july or august).
But I tried forcing it (do-release-upgrade -d) in the "testing" VM I also have installed, and it "mostly" worked. mythweb has some additional dependences that (at the time) weren't done automatically. Maybe they've been fixed? Who knows! That's why it's worth waiting until the point release.

Wow, thanks for the info, it's exactly what I was looking for.
I've done Linux a long time, but was unaware of the point release aspect of LTS releases. Enlightening!

Waal, hell!
So, I upgrade front and backend to 0.28. Frontend now complains: "This version of Mythtv requires an updated database (schema is 27 versions behind.) Please run mythtv-setup or mythbackend to update your database.
Hmm.

I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I think somehow the backend update/dist-upgrade didn't properly complete. After re-running it, now front and backends are agreeable to one another. First run of the frontend hit an opening screen requesting an upgrade of music database (I think), which I don't use. I ran the upgrade and all seems well in 0.28 mythtv-land.

congrats!
i found 28 to be much more resilient than 27 when it comes to tv channels that have flakey signals. Also 28 records as .ts files instead of .mpg files, which is "correct" for USA NTSC hidef and makes other programs much happier when reading mythtv recordings.
Other than that, I really haven't noticed other differences between the two versions of mythtv.

Just a personal question about mpg to ts move. Would they still be named 1022_20140529062600.mpg but with a TS stream? Just wondering as I have a bash userscript I currently use on .27 to convert via handbrake to MKV.thezencowsaysmu wrote:congrats!

yes, they're still just dates rather than human-readable filenames.
Re: Upgrading 0.27->0.28 plus moving to Mythbuntu 16.04
I meant the specifically the extension. Should of made that clear.
Re: Upgrading 0.27->0.28 plus moving to Mythbuntu 16.04
Nope they're .ts files with a .TS extension as opposed to during .27 when they were ts files with .mpg extension.
