Re: Loose cable tale

Even the zip ties did not stabilize that connection, the cable pulled up again. Both disk cables were replaced this weekend with latching SATA cables. I think the root of this problem for non-latching cables is that they enter the compartment where the motherboard is through a small hole which is ab...

If you have mythffmpeg installed what streams do you see there?
Please specify the exact command you want me to run.

Re: Really bad closed caption on some recordings.

vlc analysis of the loli.ts example under tools -> Media Information ->Codec tab shows 5 streams with the last 4 being CC info, all as Codec: EIA-608 subtitles (c608) Description: Closed captions # [# one of 1,2,3,4] Type: Subtitle If there is CC708 in there vlc isn't seeing it either. Do you want m...

Re: Really bad closed caption on some recordings.

I will try it tonight. Odd that it says "CC1 English" even when the subtitles are in another language. One would guess that somewhere in the CC data there is a field which actually says which language is present, because I think some content has CC available in more than one language. "CC1 English" ...

Re: Really bad closed caption on some recordings.

Here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-YrIdeUGyPRdW5RwHpyn46Cyu2eGCER6?usp=sharing there are two files "frida.ts" and "loli.ts". Both have badly messed up closed captioning when played in mythtv 30.0. They both have correct, or at least largely correct closed captioning when that is turned o...

I have v31 running on 18.04, but build from source.

It could be a difficult test just to see if captions are better
for you.
You lost me in that last sentence. What would be difficult, building from source or determining if the captions are bad?

Re: Really bad closed caption on some recordings.

Let's see, it looks like it is possible to update v30 to v31 on 18.04.4 LTS using a different ppa. Otherwise the whole machine could be updated to 20.04 LTS, which also brings in v31, but that would be much more work (and would probably break LIRC, again.)

Really bad closed caption on some recordings.

My wife likes to watch Spanish Language Telenovelas. There is a lot of slang in these so she turned on closed captioning so she could see the word and then look it up. When playing "Buscando a Frida", a Telemundo show, the resulting text is virtually unusable. It contained maybe 20% of the text and ...

Loose cable tale

Around six months ago our DVR died and was rebuilt with a new motherboard and power supply. The last month on two occasions it locked up briefly but on reboot there were no errors or warnings during the boot. Finally yesterday it did it a 3rd time and on that reboot there were all sorts of /dev/sdb ...

Remotes with sturdy switches???

Pretty much every remote I have seen has the same sort of electronics. There is a circuit board with two pads for each button. Above it is a rubber mat which sticks up through holes in the top of the remote as buttons with labels. The bottoms of these buttons are black and contain carbon which lets ...

Re: New ATSC tuners

Will it, or won't it? https://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/hdhomerun_development.pdf Program/PID filtering: The HDHomeRun supports hardware PID filtering. When used this reduces the network bandwidth to that of the sub-channel being watched/recorded. This is useful for US-QAM as the HDHomeRun will...

Re: New ATSC tuners

Is recording multiple virtual channels from one channel at the same time actually useful? (As opposed to theoretically so.) I do not recall having every programmed a pair of shows like that, and it has been more than a decade of use.

Re: New ATSC tuners

I'd still go with a HDHomerun. I've been running one for years and it's been solid. The only problem we ever had with ours was when the power wart died after many, many years. Bought a generic one of ebay with the same specs and no problems since. (Hardly a criticism specific to the HDHomerun - eve...
