Re: The future of MythTV

We use MythTV almost exclusively as a DVR for UK Freeview OTA broadcasts. We record everything to watch later at our leisure and haven't seen an advert for about 15 years. My biggest concern over any move towards streaming services is that the non-paid for services from commercial broadcasters don't...

[SOLVED] Re: X11 library has been updated - mythtv-light install now fails

OK, turns out it was nothing to do with the mythtv-light .deb file and I had just made a silly oversight. I had previously done a full upgrade of raspbian and kept a copy of the image so I could restart experiments without having to go through the (somewhat lengthy) upgrade each time. But when the X...

Re: X11 library has been updated - mythtv-light install now fails

I'm not seeing any issues. I just started with a clean SSD with Raspberry PI OS (Desktop) and followed my instructions at https://mythtv-rp4.blogspot.com/2020/11/how-i-installed-mythtv-v31-on-my-rpi-4.html Thanks for the response. Maybe I need to re-download the mythtv-light install .deb files from...

X11 library has been updated - mythtv-light install now fails

In my experiments with trying to find a version of the frontend that works reliably on a Pi4, I recently attempted to build a new 0.30 from scratch. But when attempting to install the .deb file, it fails trying to get an X11 library file (libx11-xcb1_1.6.7-1+deb10u1_armhf.deb). Poking around the ras...

v30 of mythfrontend for raspberry pi runs under x11, so you need to startx first and run mythfrontend from the menu or from a command prompt. Also it does not take the QT_QPA environment variables, they will likely cause problems.
Ah right, thanks for the advice.

Re: Installing 0.30 on a Pi4

An update: I tried starting again from scratch, and this time ran MikeB's "pi-setup_mythtv_31.sh" script after installing mythtv-light 0.30, which as I understand things sets the system up with various tweaks and to auto-run the frontend. I didn't see anything in it which looks 0.31 specific. Now wh...

Since I have a USB DVD drive and an Nvidia Shield I thought I'd give it a try to see what happens and as I thought it does not work :(
Many thanks for trying this out for me. Pity it doesn't work.

Installing 0.30 on a Pi4

I've been fighting 0.31 on the Pi4. It's all working, but frontend playback has some glitches. Various things I've read make me wonder if 0.30 might actually work a bit better for playback. So I decided to try building a 0.30 system. I started with buster lite, got hold of the 0.30 mythtv-light .deb...

Re: Nvidia Shield v Firestick 4K for full frontend

Sorry have not tried it but the Shield can access external network storage https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/shield/support/shield-tv-pro/connecting-storage-to-your-shield/ so I would guess you could do something with that. Or use the video library supported by Mythtv Backend which would also work for F...

Re: Nvidia Shield v Firestick 4K for full frontend

IMHO there would be a very low likelihood of anyone using a Shield to watch DVDs via an attached USB DVD drive. Hence I would not expect there to be anyone that can answer this question. Then again I could be wrong. Perhaps I should explain why I'm interested in this. You know how irritating it is ...

Re: Nvidia Shield v Firestick 4K for full frontend

Just wanted to bump this thread in order to ask one very specific question. (I asked it earlier in the thread, but I think it kind of got lost while people were commenting on other things. I also asked in the the General Discussion sub-forum, but with no replies).... Someone here must be running a f...

Nvidia Shield: external DVD drive

I asked this question in passing on another thread but I think it got sort of forgotten, so I'll try it here:

Is there anyone here who runs a full Myth frontend on Nvidia Shield and has an external DVD drive connected to the Shield's USB?
Does MythTV's "Play a DVD or Bluray" facility work?

Re: Nvidia Shield v Firestick 4K for full frontend

I do have a 2017 NVidia Shield and it works great with both MythFrontent and LeanFront. One advantage with my Shield is that it has two USB ports on it. This enabled me to add a wireless keyboard/remote with many more keys that make using MythFrontend way better than with the overly simplified remo...

Re: Nvidia Shield v Firestick 4K for full frontend

If there are specific problems with leanfront let me know by opening a ticket on github https://github.com/bennettpeter/android-MythTV-Leanfront I don't have any problems as such - it's simply that I don't much care for the user interface. Maybe it's because I've spent years being used to the stand...

Re: Nvidia Shield v Firestick 4K for full frontend

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I think perhaps I should give leanfront another go to see whether we could live with it. If we can, then presumably a F4K will do the job. (I have two issues with the Shield: (i) it's almost 3 times the price of a F4K, and (ii) the remote that looks like a Toblerone is...
